Many users will have been using some type of Industrial Mobile device with a Windows operating system for years. Some will not even be aware of the fact or know which version of Windows it is! ( Windows CE or Windows Mobile) But soon there will be no further devices that run Windows at all, as the main manufacturers, Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic, have all announced that NONE of their forthcoming mobile computers and terminals will use Windows.
"Why?" you might ask, "what's going on?", well the answer is that its been coming for quite a few years now, but everyone's been ignoring the fact that Microsoft have been back peddling over replacement for CE 6.0 and Mobile 6.5 for ages and have not offered Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic a Windows roadmap for the future.
"So what?" you say, "it doesn't affect me", but it really does and it may affect your businesses total strategy on industrial mobile computers used in Factories, Warehouses, Supply Chain and more. The reason for this is that the Big Three ( Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic) will from now on only really offer Android as the base OS on mobile devices. This means that businesses that run big ERP systems like SAP, etc, can no longer be sure that the connecting client software that they have been using for years, will run on the new Android platforms.
And if that's not trouble enough, many very large organisations currently ban all Android devices from their networks due to concerns about security and hacking of their network infrastructure.
The problem is that Windows CE 6 and Windows Mobile 6.5 are actually very OLD indeed and have been slipping in and out of "End of Support" by Microsoft for years, with Microsoft continually revising the OS end of support date forward after complaints from some big customers.
But now its crunch time! With Android the only game in town from the Big Three, its time to embrace this new OS and start to listen to the advice of Zebra and Honeywell who talk about Enterprise Android, running on their latest devices such as the Zebra MC3300 and the Honeywell CT60 (above).
If you are interested in finding out more about the options for migrating away from Windows to Android, or need to understand which of your current mobile devices are discontinued and you need to understand your option.
